Ask the Dalai Lama to give religious freedom

Dalai Lama Lies

The Western Shugden Society publicly accuses the Dalai Lama of being a liar for a number of valid reasons. Below, we list some of his more pernicious lies:

The Big Lie

The Dalai Lama says Dorje Shugden is a harmful spirit.

For centuries, every great Master in the Buddhist Tradition passed down from Je Tsongkhapa, including the Dalai Lama’s root Guru Trijang Rinpoche, has revered Dorje Shugden as an enlightened being who helps sincere practitioners progress on the spiritual path by developing pure minds of love, compassion, and wisdom.

The Dalai Lama himself was trained in this tradition, and for 40 years relied upon Dorje Shugden, even composing a prayer of his own praising Dorje Shugden and requesting his help.

Then, suddenly in 1975 he abandoned the practice because he had ‘discovered’ Dorje Shugden was a harmful spirit!

Incredibly, we are being asked to believe that the Dalai Lama accidentally worshipped a harmful spirit for 40 years without noticing!

The truth

To consolidate his grip on political power in exile he has attempted to destroy the four great traditions of Tibetan Buddhism – the Gelug, Sakya, Kagyu, and Nyingma traditions – and create a new religious movement he calls ‘ri-me’.

Previously he had been a member of the Gelug tradition.

As part of a deal with some leaders of the other traditions he agreed to abandon the practice of Dorje Shugden and command others to do the same because Dorje Shugden practitioners prefer to rely upon the tradition of Je Tsongkhapa without mixing with other practices.

For sincere Buddhists to abandon a practice given by their Spiritual Guide is inconceivable, and so understandably there was considerable resistance to his calls for others to follow him in abandoning the practice.

The Dalai Lama responded by demonizing the practice, referring to a Deity he once revered as a harmful spirit and concocting absurd stories to convince those with superstitious minds to abandon the practice.

Under the guise of ‘historical investigation’, he quotes selectively from various Tibetan texts to argue that the practice has been controversial with past Dalai Lamas. What he does not address is the iniquity of the present and previous Dalai Lamas freely mixing politics with religion and frequently adopting and rejecting religious practices simply for reasons of political expedience.

Inversion of the truth

A favourite ploy of the Dalai Lama is to accuse others of the harmful actions he himself performs.

As mentioned above, he is attempting to destroy centuries old religious traditions by creating a new religious movement he calls ‘ri-me’.

To accomplish this he is also destroying the previously mainstream practice of relying upon Dorje Shugden.

Then in a remarkable inversion of the truth, he accuses those who oppose this desecration of being a minority cult!

The truth is that those who continue to rely upon Dorje Shugden are preserving a centuries old mainstream religious practice.

It is the Dalai Lama who has created a new religious movement!

The myth of sectarianism

The Dalai Lama frequently refers to the practice of Dorje Shugden as being ‘extremely sectarian’, and others believe him and dutifully refer to Shugden practitioners as a sect despite the fact that they are manifestly following a centuries old mainstream practice.

Shugden practitioners believe each person should choose a spiritual path that suits them and then follow it without mixing with other practices. Their reason is simply that it is not possible to make genuine spiritual progress if you keep switching paths, or if you try to follow more than one path at the same time.

Unlike the Dalai Lama, they do not interfere with others but believe everyone should be given the freedom to follow their chosen path. It is an abomination of the truth to refer to such a position as sectarian.

The truth is, it is the Dalai Lama who is promoting the superiority of his new religious movement and attempting to denigrate and ban practices that do not conform to it.

Denial

The Dalai Lama frequently denies he has banned the practice of Dorje Shugden and claims anyone who wishes to is free to do so.

The truth is that not just those who continue to practice, but anyone related to them or even trading with them or sharing food with them, is subject to a hideous campaign of intimidation, humiliation, and ostracism. Thousands who have experienced such treatment testify to this.

More lies

The Dalai Lama claims the practice of Dorje Shugden shortens his life. At the time of writing he is 73 years old, whereas the average age of the previous 13 Dalai Lamas is 34!

He says the practice of Dorje Shugden undermines the cause of Tibetan independence. Aside from the fact that there is not a shred of evidence to support this preposterous claim, he now says he is not pursuing Tibetan independence!

Web of deception

In recent years, the Dalai Lama has woven a web of deception to maintain his political grip on the Tibetans in exile and bolster his position as a global celebrity commanding millions of dollars in speaking fees and enjoying the adulation of heads of state, Hollywood stars, and other celebrities worldwide.

He has used his unelected authority as leader of the Tibetan people and his global celebrity status to mesmerize the world into believing everything he says, but the truth is there for anyone who cares to investigate to see
